Quality Matters Applying the QM Rubric
The QM training this week was awesome. What a great group - and the ideas were incredible. There were TOO many ideas, in fact. So, now we have a place to share all the neat things we talked about. You can post by clicking "__ Comments" below OR if you want to be a regular contributor here, let me know via e-mail (ssubocz@csmd.edu).

I very much enjoyed the session and value the tips others shared about their best practices.
ReplyDeleteHere is my tip:
Students should turn work in on time. But our students lead very full lives: work, family, and so on.
So I use tokens that students can use when life interferes with course work.
I create a numeric column in WebCT and enter 10 as the initial value. I make the column viewable to students when they go to My Grades.
If a student takes a test late or turns in an assignment late, I deduct a token for each day the event is late and annotate it so I can explain it to students if they question how many tokens they have. For assignments I enter a comment like - 2 tokens.
Here is how I explain it to students:
Tokens
Students should set aside time each week to work on this course. Students must complete assignments and tests on time.
All missed work and all late assignments will result in a grade of zero (0) unless you have a token.
Each token is worth 24 hours for one graded event.
Each student has 10 tokens for the semester.
Tokens are non transferable and become invalid on the last day of class.
Example: you turn in an assignment a day late but have a token. I will give you full credit for the assignment but deduct 1 token from your column in My Grades.
You do not need to ask to use a token. Just take the test or submit the assignment and I will deduct the token(s) from you.
When you run out of tokens you must submit all work on time or you will get a zero.
John,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this idea - I know there is still a lot of enthusiasm from our group for implementing this in other courses!
