Online Gradebooks

We are looking at some options for online gradebooks. One option is Express Services. Another is WebCT. Send us your best practices for WebCT gradebooks here (use the "Comments" button below). Interested in the Express Services tool and how it might work? Check out these links:

  1. I take the time to edit the WebCT gradebook by hiding all columns except the graded items.

I put all the graded events in chronological order so when the student sees My Grades they see all the graded items in the order they will appear during the course.

I turn on statistics for each graded item so the student can compare their performance with that of the class.

I create a total points column so students can see how many total points they have.

Then I create a grade column that looks the total points and calculates the grade.

Currently I only reveal this grade column to students at the end of class since WebCT broke this tool. But the next version will allow me to enter percentages so I will turn this on for the entire course.

This will allow students to see their current grade every time they view My Grades. And each time they get a new grade it will automatically update their grade.

I also use tokens so I create a Token column, Number format and enter 10 tokens for each student. As they turn in work late I deduct the tokens in the column and enter a note so I can remember how I got to the current number.
